The new owners of this inner city townhouse had down-sized from a large suburban property, & are avid gardeners who loved entertaning family. The current courtyard had reached its use by date, the concrete paving was discolored, an existing water feature not working, & overviewing from adjacent home meant that the space was little used.
To improve access from the interior of the townhouse a bay window was removed, & French doors installed. A high quality power operated full cassette sun awning provides summer shade, yet allows the northern winter sun into the interior living space.. We organised for the owner's favourite climbing roses to be lifted from her old garden, & to be replanted to either side of the new opening.
Granite paving was selected for its hard wearing qualities, & its impervious density reduces discoloration & algae growth. Drainage [both surface & sub-surface] are essential in all gardens but especially important in courtyard situations such as this. Fully concealed "slot " drainage was placed to pick up paving run-off, & slotted pvc placed in all garden beds.
Planting was selected to provide a visual depth to what are surprisingly narrow garden beds, screen neighbours, & to provide the seasonal flowers & foliage texture & color that is reminiscent of the old, larger garden.
Skillfuly designed garden lighting brings the garden to life at night.
Lastly, the clients favourite urn was positioned at a focal point to alfresco patio, & an African sculpture collected during their travels terminated the mondo-grass border steppers.
